Could this be you?

Could this be you?

Off By Ed Hanna

From the Royal Engineers to Nottinghamshire Police.

Before joining Nottinghamshire Police, David Maitland Served for 12 years in the Royal Engineers. A former Army Diver, he also completed the All Arms Commando course, Served in Afghanistan and South Sudan, and deployed to the Caribbean having been trained in disaster relief operations. He took time out of his busy schedule to explain how the Force’s pioneering Military recruitment scheme is helping him start a new and exciting chapter in his life.

“Ultimately, I felt I had achieved everything I could achieve in the Military and wanted to find something
new. I’ve always had aspirations to join the police and when I saw the first Military Service Leavers Pathway into Policing course, I knew it was a great opportunity.

Through friends, I also knew that Nottinghamshire Police is one of the most respected constabularies in the country. I wanted to work in a professional organisation, alongside partners and the community to provide an outstanding service I can be proud to be a part of.

I am lucky to have a few friends in Nottingham and I know it’s a fantastic area with loads of history to explore. I am excited to have the opportunity to live in a new area, having also lived in Germany, Scotland and Devon during my Military career.

I am currently halfway through the course and I can see that being ex-Military is going to help me massively. I feel that the core values and standards that have seen me develop into the person I am today will translate perfectly into the police officer role.

Having courage, discipline and integrity will be important as a police officer, as I will have to make difficult decisions and must stand by and be accountable for those decisions. As the Military is also a very diverse and multicultural environment, this has also enabled me to fully understand what having respect for others means.

Nottinghamshire is also very diverse, so I feel this experience will help me gain residents’ trust, which is vital to effective policing. So, if you find your dream job outside the Military and wish to pursue it, have faith in the decision you are making. Work alongside your resettlement officer so you fully understand everything you are entitled to and reach out to partnership organisations that are set up to aid Military personnel transitioning into a new career.

While you should always have back-up plans, if you are determined enough, you will end up in the career you dream of.”
