When it comes to your favourite cake – does your answer match your service? The Royal Navy and Royal Air Force prefer Lemon Drizzle Cake but the Army, who prefer Carrot Cake and Royal Marines who decided Chocolate Cake is their winner, are going against the trend.

YouGov research for military charity Help for Heroes – has looked at the Armed Forces favourite sweet treats and the link between baking and mental health ahead of their ‘Bake for Heroes’ campaign.

12% of UK adults crowned Lemon Drizzle the winner– making it the nation’s favourite and 22% of UK adults say that they find baking therapeutic. 20% of the Royal Navy agreed that baking makes them feel good and 24% of the Royal Air Force enjoy the sense of accomplishment when they finish baking something.

Former British Army Helicopter Pilot and Star of Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers, Rosie Dummer said how care packages can help troops whilst they’re away:

“It’s not unusual for friends and family to send a member of the Armed Forces a cake or biscuits while they’re deployed abroad – and this can be such a great pick me-up when you’re away from home.”

Help for Heroes added: “Our research shows that they’ll feel great getting involved, especially knowing that every penny raised will provide vital support to our nation’s heroes.”
