Thames Valley Police
Thames Valley Police (TVP) was proud to welcome HRH Prince William on a visit to mark World Mental Health Day on 10 October at our tri-service base in Milton Keynes.
Having previously worked for both the RAF and air ambulance, the Prince of Wales has first-hand knowledge of the challenges experienced through working in an emergency service. TVP’s Bletchley Neighbourhood Team, alongside colleagues from Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue and South Central Ambulance Service, were honoured to meet with him and talk about the importance of mental wellbeing.
The Prince of Wales spoke with officers, firefighters, paramedics and volunteers who are early in their careers about the challenges they face, and how they look after their own mental wellbeing and resilience. He was joined by psychologist and former journalist, Dr Sian Williams, who led a discussion with the Prince and the first responders.
Camaraderie
A number of our police community support officers (PCSOs) and police officers spoke bravely and openly with the Prince of Wales and Dr Sian Williams about the challenges they face as emergency responders and how they cope. The Prince of Wales was asked about his own experience, and he agreed that colleagues and camaraderie have a huge impact on how people deal with traumatic incidents and that talking helps to deal with a range of emotions and stress.
With over 8,500 staff, officers and volunteers, our people are what makes us Thames Valley Police, and ensuring everyone has the knowledge to spot when things aren’t feeling right and having resources in place for when they may be needed is a priority for us. We welcome those making the transition from Military service to the police.
Join Thames Valley Police and continue to protect our communities.
