M.B. Roche & Sons – helping Veterans transition into a second career

Off By Ed Hanna

The construction industry has a huge shortage of skilled workers and many of the 21,000 personnel that leave the Armed Forces each year have skills that are directly transferable to our industry.

M.B.Roche & Sons Ltd are family run civil engineering contractors based in Hull. We promote the construction industry to Service-leavers and Veterans and help connect the Military community to industry employers, industry bodies and charities. We aim to inspire, engage and enable Veterans to effectively transition to a career in civil engineering and groundworks.

Service-leavers are nearly twice as likely to be unemployed as their civilian contemporaries and misconceptions based on negative stereotypes mean employers are missing out on this great pool of talent.

Supporting Service-leavers

Through our Veterans employment programme of hiring Military candidates based on ability and potential rather than industry experience, we are taking responsibility and supporting them to successfully transition into second careers.

As a small civils employer, the skills gap and a retiring workforce is a real problem. Ex-military personnel fit the bill perfectly, they have a can-do attitude, great communication skills, are self-motivated, good problem solvers, team players, are reliable, can multi-task and are honest. But it appears they are not the best at selling themselves.

Since signing the Armed Forces Covenant we have been providing work placements and full-time employment to Service-leavers together with mentoring guidance on identifying transferrable skills, training and job opportunities.

All of this has resulted in us being presented with the Gold Award in the Employers Recognition Scheme.
