A site manager will oversee site operations on a day-to-day basis, and is responsible for work being carried out safely, on time, within budget and to the right quality standards.

As a manager on smaller sites, you might have full responsibility for the whole project. On larger sites, you may have a Site Foreman reporting to you, be in charge of a particular section or report to a more senior site manager.

While work is taking place, the site manager will monitor progress, oversee ordering, delivery and storage of materials, carry out safety checks and sort out any problems that could hold up work as they arise.

A site manager will also keep in close contact with members of their site team at all times, and regularly liaise with architects, engineers, interior designers and other members of the design team. He or she will also ensure that work complies with building regulations and health and safety legislation as well as other legal requirements.

Finally, a site manager also acts as the first point of contact for members of the public and sub-contractors.

What would your ideal candidate look like?

The most important thing they’re looking for is a great attitude to work. Candidates should have a ‘can do’ attitude, with a focus on delivering a great job for their clients.


  • To work as a site manager, you would normally need a foundation degree, HNC/HND or degree in a related area OR several years’ experience in the building industry.
  • You could also come into this job from a background as an estimator, a building technician or a site supervisor.
  • More important to us are you personal attributes. If you can say ‘yes’ to the following list, they want to hear from you:
  • Be honest and trustworthy

  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity to people of other nationalities, religions, etc.
  • Be flexible and understand the agile mindset
  • Demonstrate a sound work ethic
  • Deal with the client and public in a positive, courteous and respectful manner
  • Good communication and team-working skills.


They operate an industry-leading performance-related bonus where the Project Squad will be rewarded if their project is performing well.

They  tend not to encourage overtime as it suggests they haven’t planned or organised the work well enough. They believe everyone earns the right to spend time with their families at the weekends and evenings. Sometimes, however, they hit a spike where they need to respond and they deal with that on a case by case basis.

Generic Detail

Each Project Squad is typically made up of 7-8 members dependent on the size of the project and will include a Site Foreman, Carpenters, Multi-skilled builders, Skilled labourer, Labourer and Apprentice.

They strongly believe in the principle of continual improvement and professional training.
