My (bus) route into a post-Forces career with Stagecoach
Stagecoach Interim Operations Director and Armed Forces & Veterans Lead UK, Simon Tramalloni, tells Civvy Street Magazine about his route into his post-Forces career.
How was resettlement?
Difficult but it was a long time ago, 23 years. I remember getting a brochure detailing how much money I could spend on a training course relating to how much Service I had completed. No real support, just ‘Have a look through this and pick one’; not real contact after I had left, apart from my friends of course. A lot has changed in recent years and the resettlement package is a lot better and structured today, which is great.
What’s your current role and how did you get into it?
I started as a driver and worked my way up through various managerial positions in roles throughout the UK to the position of Interim Operations Director that I hold today.
How have you utilised the skills and attributes you developed in the Military?
The Military gives you structure, confidence and the ability to communicate with all people, irrespective of their backgrounds. This is one of the selling points that my colleagues use when they go to Military recruitment fairs to try to attract them.
Basically, with Stagecoach, as a driver or any other role, you are told what time to come to work, what you are to wear, when your breaks are and at what time you finish. So, the structure is ideal for people about to leave the Forces.
You also support Veterans…
I work closely with a lot of Forces charities including RBL and Combat Stress and regularly sit on panels and lead different groups. I am also a mental health first aider. This is very important to me, as I have first-hand experience of dealing with mental health matters, primarily with ex-Forces personnel experiencing PTSD. I’ve been able to assist colleagues who are struggling.
What’s your best piece of advice for Service-leavers?
Do what is right for you, rather than being pressured into just going with the flow. The skills and attributes gained in the Forces will help you to upskill in most organisations, so long as the will is there.
