From Royal Air Force to Nottinghamshire Police

Lianna Storey, a former Flight Operations Assistant with the Royal Air Force, joined Nottinghamshire Police as an emergency call handler working in the control room. She is one of many other ex-Military personnel who have chosen Nottinghamshire Police as their next career path.

No day is ever the same working in the control room at Nottinghamshire Police, one minute you could be noting down the details of a stolen vehicle. Next, you might be taking a report of a sudden death.

After deciding it was time to leave the Military behind due to the growing pressures of work-life balance and having had two children, Lianna saw the advertisement on the Nottinghamshire Police website for an emergency call handler role.

She said: “When I saw the job advertisement, I was immediately intrigued!” She added: “While not a serving police officer role, I imagined that it would be the next best thing to joining as an officer and maintaining the camaraderie and overarching team spirit that I had missed so much.”

Nottinghamshire Police offers many opportunities for ex-Military personnel due to the range of transferable skills of working in a high-pressure and paced environment. Since joining Nottinghamshire Police, Lianna hasn’t looked back and has progressed into a new role. As a member of the team working in the control room, Lianna is at the centre of policing in Nottinghamshire and finds herself dealing with incidents that most people would never come across.

She said: “Having taken 999 and 101 calls for a year and experienced the most extremely rewarding time I have had, the opportunity for me to become a police dispatcher arose.

After further training and a period of mentoring, I hit the ground running. Managing the demand for a specific area in Nottingham, rationalising the response times, and routinely identifying the most correct resource to attend. I have now gone one step further and have been assigned the role of temporary control room supervisor.

Being ex-Military, I have found that I have many transferable skills and a high work ethic to achieve and be the best I can. Become a part of the policing family and get a rewarding career in the heartbeat of the Force, helping people who are often at their most vulnerable. Every day is different!”
