Putting people first by valuing respect, teamwork and diversity

Barnsley Hospital provides acute healthcare for the people of Barnsley and surrounding areas. We’re a medium sized district general hospital serving around a quarter of a million people. We pride ourselves on our community, as so many of our patients have relatives employed here; it feels like we are one big family.

Our specialised services include cancer and surgical services in partnership with other local providers in the region, alongside an assistive technology team which serves a large part of northern England.

We’ve been investing a lot in our facilities in recent years. In 2018 we opened our state-of-the art neonatal unit which has received glowing feedback from families and the staff who work there. We launched a fantastic new children’s emergency department and assessment unit in 2021. This year we opened the doors to our ground-breaking community diagnostic centre in Barnsley town centre – a dedicated space outside the traditional hospital environment to help tackle the Covid diagnostic backlog, and the first of its kind to be located in a town centre retail and leisure facility.

Expanding critical capacity

Early in 2023 we will complete our new intensive care unit which expands our critical care capacity and offers wonderful new facilities for our teams, patients and families.

Alongside these new facilities, we have developed a challenging strategic service delivery plan to transform our patient services. Our vision is that, through continuous quality improvement, our patients will receive the highest possible quality of care in modern settings with flexible access to the latest medical treatments and diagnostics. A huge part of this is our commitment to supporting and developing our people to deliver our ambitions.

Our colleagues are the key element of our plans and we’re looking to expand our nursing teams in trauma and orthopaedics and acute and emergency medicine. To support these essential services, we’ll need more pharmacists, registered radiographers, occupational therapists and speech therapists, as well as other support roles, such as IT training specialists.

Lead for Acute Pain, Nigel Bullock, also happens to be a Major in the British Army’s 212 Field Hospital (Yorkshire). Nigel said his work in the Military has set him up well for his career in the NHS.

“Knowing about strategic planning was invaluable in implementing an acute pain service that had been absent for 10 years at Barnsley Hospital. We work under extreme pressure seeing up to 22 patients to assess with acute pain in one shift.

Working in a team is a Military ethos that we can bring to the NHS along with the ability to delegate, as well as instruction/teaching skills.”

Barnsley is a growing economy with lots of opportunities and a thriving culture. Bordering on the Peak District National Park, we have many beautiful outdoor spaces, and easy access to the rest of Yorkshire.

We pride ourselves on being a crucial part of our town and we’re proud of our town.
