Protecting the Overseas Estate

Protecting the Overseas Estate

Off By Mia Craven

This Remembrance Day, we’re sharing a chapter of history you may not have heard about.

FCDO Services protects the UK’s interests at home and overseas. We design and build secure government buildings, courier diplomatic packages worldwide, safeguard government technology and more.

For decades, in one form or another, we’ve kept British diplomacy connected and secure.

Serving the Crown
As we remember this November, all those who sacrificed so much for our country to protect our freedom, it’s worth thinking about all those who worked behind the scenes too – intercepting intelligence, maintaining vital lines of communication and securely transporting goods.

Our history
Our early radio engineers intercepted enemy radio transmissions. Working with sites like Bletchley Park, staff could intercept, decode and act on a message within hours, feeding intelligence that helped secure victory.

In 1945, alarming discoveries of eavesdropping devices at a mission overseas made it clear that protecting the security of diplomatic premises was just as important as the security of the communications passing through them.
In the decades since the Second World War, we have continued that work from our technical engineering base near Milton Keynes – securing the overseas estate and providing vital services to keep it running in order to protect British interests here and abroad.

Public service continues
The threats have changed, the technology has transformed, but our purpose hasn’t: protecting people, data and assets.

None of it happens without the right staff. Many of our people came to us from the Armed Forces, bringing exactly the kind of discipline, adaptability and leadership our work demands.

Use your skills
If you’ve served, you understand what quick thinking and reliability under pressure really mean. Whether your background is engineering, logistics, project management or security, the discipline and adaptability you’ve built in uniform translate directly into the work we do.

Our staff are supported with training, whatever level they join us at, to help them build second careers. Staff can access a range of benefits that help with the transition to civilian life too. This includes access to an Employment Assistance Programme that provides professional help, support and information.

Guaranteed interview
We’re proud to be a Great Place to Work for Veterans, offering a guaranteed interview to ex-forces candidates who meet the minimum criteria for our roles.
