From Military Service to NHS Careers: A New Pathway for the Armed Forces Community
For those leaving the Armed Forces, the desire to continue Serving others rarely disappears; it simply looks for a new direction. Across Scotland, The Armed Forces Talent Programme is helping Service-leavers, Veterans, and their families channel that commitment into rewarding careers within the NHS.
The Armed Forces Talent Programme (AFTP), funded by the Scottish Government, is designed to do exactly that: take the
* Skills
* Experience
* And values
of the Armed Forces community and match them with the workforce needs of NHS Scotland.
At the heart of the programme is a simple but powerful idea – Military experience has real and immediate value in healthcare.
Through a combination of engagement events, career guidance, and practical support, the AFTP helps individuals understand how their existing skills translate into NHS roles. Leadership, resilience, teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure are not just transferable; they are essential.
Two of the programme’s flagship initiatives, Paid Placements and the “Look at Life” Project, offer participants a unique opportunity to step inside real NHS environments. Delivered through
in-person experiences at hospital sites, these projects give attendees insight into both clinical and non-clinical careers.
From estates and facilities to diagnostics, administration, and health services, participants gain a clearer understanding of where they might fit, and how to get there.
Crucially, the Armed Forces Talent Programme is not just about raising awareness. It provides practical, hands-on support, including:
- Translating Military roles into NHS competencies
- Application guidance
- Interview preparation
- Insight into career pathways and progression routes
This structured approach helps remove uncertainty and builds confidence at a critical stage in Military transition.
The programme also benefits NHS Scotland. With ongoing workforce pressures in key areas, the AFTP provides access to a highly motivated, skilled, and values-driven talent pool. By creating a consistent pipeline of candidates who already understand the culture and expectations of the NHS, the programme supports long-term workforce sustainability.
Beyond employment, the AFTP reflects a broader commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, ensuring fairness, opportunity, and support for those who have Served But perhaps most importantly, it offers something less tangible yet deeply important: a renewed sense of purpose.
For many participants, moving into the NHS is not about starting again; it is about continuing a lifelong commitment to Service.
As the programme grows and expands across Scotland, its message is clear:
The transition from Military to civilian life is not the end of Service, it’s the beginning of a new chapter.
The AFTP is offering paid placement opportunities within NHS Scotland for Service-leavers, Reservists, Veterans, and their families.
Bring your leadership, teamwork and resilience to a career that makes a difference every day.
