A rewarding role with North Wales Police

Off By Mia Craven

Ready for a new challenge, Constable Matt Campell-Henry joined North Wales Police in 2023 bringing 24 years of Military experience from the Army and has already experimented with various areas of policing.

The response officer role involves foot patrols, engaging with the community, mobile patrol, responding to urgent and non-urgent calls, missing person enquiries, shoplifting, theft offences, assaults, burglary, domestic related incidents and individuals in crisis, though the list is endless. In fact, it’s this that he particularly enjoys; arriving at work, not knowing what the shift has in store for him. Matt works a shift pattern of two days and two nights on duty, with four days off, in the Denbighshire area.

Matt describes his team as “great” and ‘team players’ and knows that there is always someone there to help, while also recognising that their age range and experience is a huge benefit that presents different strengths. He also explains that while they take their work seriously, they also find time to have a chat and a little fun along the way.

As a family man, Matt understands the importance of balancing family and work commitments. The shifts work well alongside his wife’s, also a shift worker, so he still finds time to enjoy his carp fishing hobby.

Career progression
In May 2025 Matt passed the Hostage and Crisis Negotiator Unit (HCNU) course; a role he finds really interesting and rewarding, helping those in crisis, but Matt’s contribution doesn’t stop there! As a Veteran, Matt has many ex-Army friends within different Forces across the UK, so, proudly representing North Wales by leading the NWP Ceremonial Team enables him to join friends and comrades at events, often as the standard bearer, responsible for carrying and presenting the standard (flag) affiliated to North Wales. Not only is this duty voluntary, but the additional responsibility demonstrates his high level of discipline and attention, so it’s no surprise that he was selected to carry the standard on National Police Memorial Day last autumn; an important day when the policing family comes together to remember colleagues who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Matt recalls how helpful the recruitment team was and that the joining process was straightforward; further describing the organisation as supportive and helpful. Matt’s advice for anyone considering a career with North Wales Police is, simple: “Don’t give it a second thought. If you want a challenge and a very rewarding job, then NWP is the place.”
