Black Moth Tattoo Academy launches new course
The Black Moth Tattoo Academy has launched a new tattoo artist course, with a specially discounted rate for Veterans.
Participants will be able to learn all the skills they need to become a qualified tattoo artist over the course of three months (starting 12 January 2024) from experienced instructors.
On completion of the course, they can go on to earn up to £500 per day as professional tattoo artists.
Tattoo artist and instructor, Lynden Vann and tattoo artist, Danny Grant, have designed a comprehensive course covering all the essentials towards becoming a qualified tattoo artist.
Describing the main benefit of the course, Lynden told Civvy Steet Magazine that: “You cannot learn tattooing online. You need to have your hands on real skin and you need to be able to feel the tattoo machine.”
Lynden, formerly of the Royal Engineers, has been a cosmetic tattoo artist for seven years, mostly helping people with conditions such as cancer and alopecia to feel better about their appearance, and he’s also a qualified trainer with a TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) (qualification Number: 601/1831/3). Co-founder, Danny Grant works as a traditional tattoo artist.
The course covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Health & safety
- Needle types and usage
- Tattoo machines
- Sterilising equipment
- Tattooing fundamentals
- Skin preparation
- Stencil creation
- Line work
- Line weights
- Shading and light source
- Shading styles and techniques
- Colour work and colour saturation
- Colour blending and colour theory
- Working with clients
- Aftercare
The cost of the course is £4,800 but Veterans can join at the discounted rate of £3,800 and includes all the equipment necessary to become a fully qualified tattoo artist. Further value is assured by keeping numbers of course participants to a minimum, with no more than 10 taking part in the course, individuals have more time with the trainers. That said, students will also be able to revisit topics by viewing a series of online videos that accompany the course.
Students take on two projects per week, assessed by the trainers, and will receive a syllabus detailing the lessons and projects as they commence the course.
Because modern tattoo methods are based on using a carbon lining paper, no prior artistic experience is required to succeed.
