DHU Healthcare has a longstanding commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.

We are proud to be a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging to support the Armed Forces community by treating them with fairness and respect. As a silver Employment Recognition Scheme Award holder, we have showcased numerous achievements and stories about how former Service personnel have adapted their skills to their new roles at DHU.

DHU’s CEO, Stephen Bateman, signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

DHU Healthcare actively supports the employment of Veterans, Reservists, and Military spouses, recognising the unique skills and experiences they bring to our team. We can offer:

  • Guaranteed interviews – We actively support the recruitment of Veterans, Reservists, and their spouses, provided they meet the essential criteria of a role.
  • Flexible working arrangements – To accommodate the unique demands of your Military life, including deployments and training schedules.
  • Career development opportunities – Tailored programmes to help Veterans and their families transition into civilian roles within the healthcare sector.
  • Supportive workplace policies – Policies that ensure Reservists can fulfil their training and deployment obligations without detriment to their career progression or job security.

DHU Healthcare’s commitment to the Armed Forces is also recognised through formal acknowledgments:

  • Armed Forces Covenant – As a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, we have pledged to honour and support the Armed Forces community, ensuring that those who Serve or have Served, and their families, are treated with fairness and respect.
  • Employer Recognition Scheme – Receiving accolades under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), which acknowledges employers who actively support the Armed Forces community.

Working with charities and support groups to provide comprehensive healthcare and wellbeing services to Veterans and their families.

We collaborate with various Military and Veterans organisations to enhance support for the Armed Forces community, including:

  • Partnerships with Veteran support organisations – Working with charities and support organisations to provide comprehensive healthcare and wellbeing services to Veterans and their families.
  • Community health initiatives – We signpost colleagues to programmes specifically designed to address the health needs of Military personnel, Veterans, and their families, recognising the unique challenges they face.
  • Accessible healthcare – Ensuring that members of the Armed Forces and their families have easy access to healthcare services, via in-person consultations and telehealth options.

At DHU Healthcare our people are our most valuable asset, that’s why we invest in their growth, wellbeing, and professional development, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive and deliver exceptional service. Additionally, we highly value our employees’ feedback and actively incorporate everyone’s perspectives to implement changes and enhancements. Internally, DHU Healthcare has established support mechanisms for employees who are part of the Armed Forces community:

Internal support networks
We provide a platform for Armed Forces personnel and their families within the organisation to connect, share experiences, and access support.

Alongside upholding the key principles of our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, DHU can be found attending parades to celebrate local Pride events and supporting incredible charities by match-funding through our recently launched social impact committee. By taking part in sector-based work academy programmes we reach out to those struggling to secure employment and continuously celebrate and embrace the importance of every individual in our endeavour to cultivate a sense of belonging among all our staff.

Paving the way for leaders to empower their teams
Maximising on the leadership qualities our Veterans and Reservist colleagues have gained during their time in the Military, we introduced the Inspire Programme, an initiative implemented to change the culture of leadership to better support and empower teams across the organisation. Inspire is based around coaching-led leadership and was designed to take our leaders on a journey, helping them to grow, thrive and be the best they can be by changing mindsets and behaviours, and enabling people to reach for the stars. Inspire has been, and continues to be, a significant success throughout the entire business, paving the way for leaders to empower their teams by instilling confidence, enhancing efficiency, and fostering innovation.

“Who I am today…”

Speaking about his own transition from the Armed Forces to life at DHU, Head of Talent Acquisition, Chris Rowe said:

“I had to learn to rely on my resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills that were refined in the Military. This transition taught me the importance of seeking support, embracing new opportunities, and continuously learning. It taught me more about myself as a person and I became able to articulate why I joined the Army, why I left and importantly, who I am today.

Now, as part of DHU Healthcare, I bring not only my Military background but also my firsthand understanding of the difficulties faced during this transition. As a senior leader in our People & Culture team, it has allowed me to support, guide and coach our colleagues, with a different perspective on the challenges we face at times. Serving in the Military was an exhilarating life experience; being able to use this narrative to support others is an absolute privilege.”
