Armed Forces Day

Saturday 29 June 2024 is Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday of each June and is an ideal opportunity to celebrate the role of the British Armed Forces in national life.

By attending an event or hosting your own, you’ll be demonstrating your support to the Armed Forces community, that includes Service personnel but also Military spouses and families, as well as Reservists, Cadets, Service-leavers and Veterans.

As anyone with a link to the Forces will realise, we’re living in a period of uncertainty, in terms of the geopolitical climate, with troubling violence in the Middle East and also the ongoing war in Ukraine. Elsewhere British Military personnel provide security and fight terrorism as well as deliver aid and other essential services in times of crisis. It isn’t difficult to imagine a scenario whereby British Armed Forces could be deployed to regions around the world at a moment’s notice, so while Armed Forces Day is celebratory, it’s based around a very real respect for the dedication of those that protect us.

If you’re unable to take part in an event in person, you can still make a contribution to the day by following Armed Forces Day on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) and sending a photo or video of yourself or your friends and colleagues saluting on X (@ArmedForcesDay), Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag: #SaluteOurForces.

Armed Forces Day is easily accessible to anyone from schoolchildren to Forces families and Veterans, to express their gratitude. Anybody can display a flag, or hang bunting, or raise a glass.

However you choose to spend Armed Forces Day is entirely up to you; whether you go along to an organised event or create your own. Perhaps the most heartening aspect of Armed Forces Day is that it is a choice, rather than an obligation. In other words, people choose to observe it or get involved because they want to, and they believe it’s important. This is surely the genuine hallmark of the nation’s fond respect for the Armed Forces.
