Thames Valley Police Resettlement Payment Success
In autumn 2022, we became the first force in England and Wales to introduce a resettlement payment for Military personnel.
Thames Valley Police (TVP) recognises the transition into civilian life for Military leavers can be difficult, so last year we became the first force in England and Wales to introduce a resettlement payment for Military personnel. The result has been a 40% increase in applications from those seeking to leave the Armed Forces and 2022/23 saw a 360% increase on 2021/22 in joiners, with 18 former Service personnel starting their police officer training.
PC (Police Constable) Roberts, student officer and former Army Tank Crewman of seven years enthused: “The £2,500 resettlement payment was a big incentive, as I had considered another force. It helped me with the drop in pay from the Army and smoothed the transition. I felt TVP was the right choice due to the incentive and I felt they really supported Service-leavers.”
Ties with the Military
TVP has a long history of strong ties to the Military, often standing shoulder to shoulder when policing state events, including royal weddings and in 2022, the funeral of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Police Officer Recruitment Lead, Inspector Andy Fiddler – an Army veteran himself, said, “TVP recognises the transferable skills Military personnel bring to policing. Much like the Military, we are a police family and support those who wish to continue Serving, start a new career.”
The force continues to offer the IPLDP (Initial Police Learning and Development Programme) plus entry route for those who do not wish to attain academic qualifications during initial training. This option will be phased out during Summer 2023, prior to the College of Policing introducing a new non-degree entry route. With multiple different entry routes available, offering a chance to earn while you learn and gain extra qualifications, there has never been a better time to join policing with TVP.
