Durham Constabulary is looking for new recruits who want to make their experience count and protect the communities we serve.

This summer, Durham Constabulary is recruiting new officers to join one of the country’s top-performing police forces and build an exciting and rewarding career as part of the policing family.

Durham Constabulary is looking for people with the transferable skills and the core values which Military personnel are famed for: service, dedication, compassion and resilience and is recruiting over the coming months for new starters to begin their Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship training in January.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Cuthbert said: “We know that people who have Served in the Forces already have the skills and the experience we need in the police.

Police roles can be physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding and our officers need those skills to make a real difference to those who need it most, in the communities we serve”.

Veterans
Many of our officers have previously Served with the Military and in 2020 the force signed up to the Armed Forces Community Covenant and pledged to work with local partners to support service personnel, Veterans and their families.

It is challenging – and it’s not all about catching criminals. One day you could be working closely with communities, patrolling your area on foot, by car or by bike to provide a reassuring presence to residents, deter crime and safeguard vulnerable people, while the next you could be first on scene at a fatal road traffic collision, or diffusing potentially volatile situations. Above all, it’s about protecting people and making people feel safer.

Our officers start on £26,600, but with seven years’ progression will typically earn more than £43,000 a year and there will be endless opportunities to further your career by joining specialist teams such as Roads and Armed Policing, Safeguarding or CID.

Durham Constabulary offers the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) which allows you to earn a competitive salary from day one, while studying towards a fully funded degree.

Opportunity
The three-year apprenticeship programme provides you with the opportunity to learn as you earn and achieve a BSc (Hons) degree in Professional Policing Practice and all costs are covered by the force. You’ll need to be fit, aged 17-57 and have a full driving licence.

As well as police constable roles, we’re also looking to recruit civilian support staff, with many of the positions requiring skills which are transferrable from a Military career such as IT technicians, communications specialists, analysts and mechanics.

That fantastic career opportunity comes while living and working in an outstanding environment, with historic cities, stunning coast and countryside on your doorstep, not to mention affordable housing and easy commuting.
