Help For Heroes – “Volunteering keeps me smiling”
An Army veteran has found a sense of belonging and purpose again by being part of the Help for Heroes volunteering community.
Paul Served for 16 years in the Royal Signals, before injuries he sustained during training led to his medical discharge.
“When I saw the letter, and read, ‘I’m now unfit for Military service’ it just swallowed me up. It was horrible.”
Paul described the support he received from Help for Heroes as one of the main reasons he’s still here and carrying on with life. “Help for Heroes is my Military now. It’s my go-to, it’s my pride, it’s my uniform. It’s what keeps me smiling.”
Inspiring
The former Corporal will be proudly representing us at our Tesco Collection Weekend on June 17 and 18. He says he finds it ‘inspiring’ seeing people give so generously to the cause he passionately believes in. The cause that’s helped him.
“When those walls came closing in, volunteering really pushed them back out. Being around the volunteers is amazing. They’re very kind and friendly. They make you feel welcome. What they do makes a difference to people’s lives. It’s made a difference to mine.
It’s inspiring to see people give their time and effort, to raise money for other people. It’s incredible.”
If, like Paul, you want to be part of something special and help Veterans in your community, why not join us for the Tesco Collection Weekend?
