Change lives with a career in offender healthcare

If you have a passion for healthcare and a desire to make a positive impact on society, then working in offender healthcare may be the perfect fit for you.

Sarah has worked within secure environments for 17 years and can’t imagine any better way to spend her working day. Sarah said: “Providing offender healthcare can be a challenging but incredibly rewarding career. As a healthcare professional in a prison, you have the chance to make a significant impact on people’s lives and play a crucial role in ensuring that they receive the care they need to maintain their physical and mental health.”

Sarah added: “No two days are the same, and you’ll have many different experiences that will really help to broaden your skills and develop your knowledge. Obviously, you have to do the same training and keep yourself clinically up to date as you would as a healthcare provider to the general public, but you also need specific training to be able to work in a secure environment. I was a prison officer before becoming a nurse and I love it.”

Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust is proud to be the UK’s largest NHS provider of offender healthcare, as well as providing a wide range of health and social care services to people living in south east London, parts of Kent and in secure environments in the south west of England.

Our aim is to provide quality evidence-based healthcare to offenders, creating a range of services and interventions that are comparable to services provided to the general public. There are many opportunities to develop a career in offender healthcare for nursing, allied health professionals, medical and support staff.

Oxleas NHS is also a proud supporter of the Armed Forces. In November 2022 we were awarded the coveted Gold Award in the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, marking our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. We also support members of the Armed Forces community through the Step into Health programme.
