A move to NHS Western Isles could be the lifestyle change you need.

Outstanding quality of opportunity and lifestyle

Alongside being part of a dynamic and ambitious NHS board, the quality of life in the Western Isles, particularly for those with families, is outstanding. You’ll find a close-knit and welcoming community, proud of the place they live in and keen to support youngsters. The Western Isles is a uniquely stunning location, from the world-famous beaches and crystal clear, clean breaking waters; to the rocky coastlines and incredible wildlife, there are adventures to be had on a daily basis.

Medical Director, Dr Frank McAuley, a highly experienced anaesthetist by background, made the move to the Western Isles in 2020, from North East England, and has never looked back.

He explains: “Living on the Western Isles provides space to live and breathe and as with any island living, a more relaxed timescale to everyday life.

Working here brings similar clinical issues as anywhere else, the difference being the geography and staffing resource. Risk appetite, planning well ahead, anticipating potential issues and working as a collaborative clinical team are essential and at times challenging, but so rewarding. Being part of a small team with a flat management structure gives you a wider breadth of experience as well as opportunities to be actively involved in a wider range of planning and decision-making.

The undifferentiated acute presentations and the ability to build long-term relationships with patients and their families are unusual in more urban areas, but part of what makes working here so special.”
