Breaking down the barriers

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust links with DWP to help people start their career within the NHS

The Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire and provides specialist tertiary care for cardiac and haematology services across the region. We provide a range of acute services to the 352,000 population of the Fylde coast health economy and the estimated 18 million visitors to the seaside town of Blackpool as well as a wide range of community health services to the 445,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde, Wyre and north Lancashire.

The Trust cover a wide variety of healthcare disciplines. The type of roles we have available across the Trust include healthcare assistants, administrative roles, porters, domestic assistants and catering staff. In addition to this, we operate a number of apprenticeship programmes and employability schemes.

 Quality employment opportunities

We want to provide quality long term employment opportunities and rich career pathways for the people within our

community, so we are working closely with job centre colleagues to facilitate a route into employment for some of our entry level roles.

This approach will include the completion of a shortened application form and our colleagues at the Department  for Work and Pensions (DWP) will undertake a matching process to find a suitable match for the vacancies we have on offer with their client base. These individuals will then be guaranteed an interview for the vacancy they have been matched to which will hopefully result in a job offer.

We are working closely together to educate job centre colleagues in our recruitment practices so that they can provide support to their clients in preparing them for the roles we are recruiting for, and we are sharing our recruitment campaigns so that all visitors to the job centre have access to our vacancies.

This is a totally new approach for both the Trust and the job centre, but we are confident that we can work together to benefit our communities and reduce unemployment in the area.
