The Scottish Prison Service

The Scottish Prison Service

Off By Ed Hanna

The Scottish Prison Service operates in a fascinating, complex and rapidly changing environment and our vision is to help build a safer Scotland by unlocking potential and transforming lives. This means we’re committed to nurturing and investing in our greatest strength and resource: people.

We are currently recruiting for operations officers to join our team at HMP&YOI Grampian, Peterhead. This is a short drive from the city of Aberdeen, making it an ideal location to resettle with family. New prison officers will commence employment with a seven-week training programme and work towards, and achieve, an SVQ Level 3 in Custodial Care within their first 12 months.

Many of the valuable skills Service-leavers bring back from the Forces can be easily transferred to a career in the Scottish Prison Service, with a number of individuals now working within HMP&YOI Grampian. When asked about their experiences, they said:

“The life experience I gained from my time in the Army set me up for this career.”

“I was promoted within my first two years of employment. This was partly down to the skills and experience I gained from my time in the Military.”

“Being able to speak to people and deal with situations is what this job is about – very similar to the Military, as teamwork is key.”
