Exceptional care for the veteran community

Exceptional care for the veteran community

Off By Mia Craven

Royal Star & Garter is a charity that provides loving, compassionate care and support for veterans and their families, living with disability or dementia, at all ages. This is provided through Care Homes in Surbiton, Solihull, High Wycombe and Worthing, and a range of services reaching into the community.

Specialist nursing, dementia and physiotherapy care focuses on wellbeing, independence and living life to the full, in beautiful, comfortable Homes. Staff guide and support residents and their families through this new life phase so that they can enjoy quality time together.

Royal Star & Garter is amongst the best care providers in the country, with ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Good’ ratings from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The group was recently named in the Top 20 Small Care Home Groups 2026 by carehome.co.uk, based on relatives’ feedback. Each Home has high numbers of staff working together to provide the very best person-centred care.

Our four Homes
The Homes were purpose-built to create a comfortable, homely space to welcome residents and visitors alike. Access is step free and low windows enable residents to enjoy views from a seated position. There are beautiful gardens and balconies where residents, family members and visitors can enjoy time outdoors whenever they wish. Housekeepers adapt the environment every day, ensuring each space is well-maintained and stimulating.

Nursing care
Generous staffing levels ensure all residents and guests attending Day Care or Lunch Club get the time and attention they deserve. Staff talk to residents and their families to gather medical and life histories, to help inform personalised care. They work alongside the residents, promoting independence, dignity and a sense of purpose.

Dementia care
Specialist dementia care, focused on person-centred support, offers care with compassion, empathy and understanding, and is tailored to each individual’s needs, wishes and abilities.
The dementia care areas are bright, homely and informal, ensuring stimulation and comfort. Thorough attention to detail supports wellbeing, from dementia-friendly furniture, such as windowed wardrobes in bedrooms, to brightly coloured plates and adapted cutlery.

The teams work with residents at their pace and are not target driven. Ongoing training ensures that the staff’s approach includes new developments in dementia care and the use of technology. These are improving diagnosis and outcomes, while keeping veterans and their partners at the heart of the care.

The dementia households use acoustic monitoring to identify unusual night-time events such as movement, which supports better rest for residents and reduces the risk of falls. An AI facial recognition system helps to support pain assessment, which is especially useful for people who cannot express themselves. Virtual reality headsets are successfully used for residents to help stimulate memory, reduce agitation and enhance wellbeing.

Physiotherapy
Each Home has a fully equipped gym where in-house physiotherapists build residents’ strength and mobility, according to their needs and wishes. Progress is documented and monitored at an individual level. Group movement-to-music sessions always prove popular with the residents too.

Wellbeing
Dedicated Wellbeing Teams offer a meaningful activities programme designed to meet the wishes of every resident and service user, reflecting their unique abilities and interests. Every day, the Teams offer activities and exercises which are designed to bring joy to veterans and their partners but also to promote conversation, friendships and celebrate their life experiences. These activities provide an opportunity to revisit old skills and learn new ones.

Residents in both nursing and dementia care are fully supported to go on outings in the adapted minibuses. Visitors
from local schools and Military bases are welcomed into the Homes to
nurture a wide range of friendships, so that residents feel fully engaged with their community too. Relatives are integral to understanding how residents can best be supported to live a full life.

Supporting families
Royal Star & Garter offers care with love, so that families can enjoy spending time with their relative, simply being a partner, parent or child again – helping to guide relatives as they walk with their loved one through this new life phase.

Every Home offers a warm welcome to friends and family, whenever it suits them, and supports celebrations, from birthdays to weddings. Regular relatives’ meetings provide a safe space to discuss a loved one’s care with key staff.

The teams recognise the importance of helping families too, throughout a resident’s life and, when they die, through the Bereavement Support Programme.

Reaching into the community

Royal Star & Garter offers a lifeline to many veterans and their partners who may feel isolated or struggle with loneliness. Day Care and Lunch Clubs provide good company, delicious food and shared activities, in warm and welcoming surroundings.

The Telephone Friendship Service reaches out to people in their own homes to support them and provide companionship.

The range of services it provides means that Royal Star & Garter can continue to support veterans and their families even if care needs change, ensuring that the charity can benefit the veteran community of all ages, wherever they live.
