Driving your next mission: Build a career with ECM
Leaving the Armed Forces is the start of a new mission – and for many Service-leavers, the logistics and transport sector is a natural next step. Built on precision, planning, teamwork and reliability, logistics mirrors many of the skills developed during Military service.
At ECM (Vehicle Delivery Service) Ltd, we understand that connection. That’s why we’re actively looking to recruit Service-leavers – particularly those with logistics and transport experience – into rewarding civilian driving roles across the UK.
Who we are
ECM is a trusted and leading provider of vehicle movement and delivery solutions, supporting customers across the automotive sector with a fleet of over 500 LGV car transporters based throughout the UK. From single vehicle movements to nationwide deliveries for motor manufacturers, our work keeps businesses moving – and we rely on skilled, dependable drivers to deliver for our clients every day.
Our success is built on professionalism, flexibility and attention to detail – the same values that underpin a Military career.
Why Service-leavers thrive with us
It’s no coincidence that so many Veterans excel in logistics roles. Military experience naturally develops the skills that employers like ECM rely on every day:
- Planning and organisationProblem-solving under pressure
- Strong communication and teamwork
- Adaptability and resilience
These are exactly the attributes needed in a fast-paced logistics environment where efficiency, reliability and customer service are key.
Driving roles that put you in control
As a car transporter driver, you will:
- Move vehicles between car factories, distribution centres and dealerships across the UK
- Deliver high standards of customer service
- Work independently while remaining part of a wider team
- Applicants must hold a Class 1 licence and have a minimum of one year’s Class 1 driving experience.
Much like your time in Service, no two days are the same – and your ability to stay organised, professional and adaptable will set you apart.
From Service to success
We recognise that moving from Military life into civilian employment can feel like a big shift. That’s why we aim to make joining ECM straightforward and supportive.
Whether you’re at the beginning of your resettlement journey or already exploring new opportunities, we offer the chance to build a long-term civilian career and a team that values your background and experience. With earnings of up to £66,000 per year, the reward reflects the high value we see in our employees.
With the car transporting industry continuing to grow and evolve, there has never been a better time to apply your Military skillset in a sector that keeps the UK moving.
From the Infantry to ECM: A Driver’s Story
I served in the Infantry with the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment and later with the 1st Battalion, The Rifles. Over my 12-year career, I deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Belize, the Falkland Islands, Kenya and Norway before leaving the Army in 2014.
Like many Service-leavers, I found myself drawn towards the logistics and haulage sector after leaving the Forces. It’s an industry that offers real job security — after all, as an island nation, the UK relies heavily on haulage to keep goods moving in and out of the country. It really is the backbone of everyday life.
There’s also a strong ex-Military presence in the industry, which makes a big difference. You quickly find yourself working alongside people with similar experiences and values, which helps with the transition to civilian life.
“Tramping” (sleeping in the cab while working across different locations) is something that most ex-Military personnel adapt to very easily. We’re already used to being away from home and staying focused in different environments.
In my opinion, ECM is one of the best transport companies to work for. It has a strong reputation across the industry, and I can personally vouch for the level of support provided to drivers. There’s a real sense of teamwork, particularly with the Traffic Department, who communicate with drivers in a collaborative and respectful way. You never feel like you’re on your own.
When you join ECM, you’re given comprehensive training. It starts with a full-day classroom session covering the fundamentals, followed by practical, hands-on training where you’re paired up with experienced drivers. The length of this depends on your confidence and previous experience, but the support is always there when you need it.
That support doesn’t stop once you’re out on the road. The training and compliance team continue to invest in drivers, with regular paid CPC courses and ongoing upskilling; particularly as new systems and technology are introduced.
The job itself is far more varied than people might expect. It’s not just about sitting behind the wheel all day. While you do cover long distances and get to see a lot of the UK, the role is also physically demanding, especially when it comes to loading and unloading vehicles.
Every day requires careful planning. You need to think about your driving hours, rest breaks, and route – but also the load itself, including factors like weight distribution and vehicle positioning. Safety is critical – you’re operating one of the longest, tallest and heaviest vehicles on the road, often transporting over a million pounds’ worth of cars, and you need to stay switched on at all times.
If you’re leaving the Forces and considering a career in haulage, I’d strongly recommend looking into the opportunities at ECM. It’s a role where your Military skills genuinely transfer, and where you’ll be supported to build a successful civilian career.
