Joining Forces with Water: Supporting Armed Forces Talent at NWG

At Northumbrian Water Group, we’re proud to champion the dedication, resilience and specialist expertise that Service-leavers and Reservists bring to civilian workplaces. Our commitment is reflected in our Ministry of Defence Silver ERS Award, which recognises the meaningful support we provide to the Armed Forces community and marks a milestone on our journey toward achieving gold-level status.

For our Serving reservists, this means flexible working, dedicated paid leave for essential training, and confident backing to continue Serving without compromise.

Central to our approach is Joining Forces with Water, our thriving Armed Forces community of over 60 colleagues. Built by Veterans and Reservists across the business, it offers specialist peer support for those transitioning from Military to civilian life.

A standout feature is our mentor-buddy system, pairing new ex-Forces colleagues with peers who understand the cultural shift, the language, and the unique strengths they bring. These connections have transformed onboarding by accelerating integration, building confidence, and providing an instant sense of belonging.

The impact is clear. Veterans feel recognised and valued, and new starters consistently highlight how supported they feel from day one. Externally, targeted outreach through partners including Career Transition Partnership, Forces Employment, and Forces Families Jobs has led to a rise in high-quality applications, particularly for roles that are traditionally hard to fill.

Through career workshops at Catterick, partnerships with local charities like Launchpad, and bespoke work placements, we’re not just opening doors, we’re building futures. We’re committed to making NWG a top choice for those who continue to Serve.
