The Long Walk Home is Haig Housing’s national event commemorating the centenary of the ending of the First World War.

The event will consist of a pilgrimage by foot of 100 Veterans from across the United Kingdom who will walk the 100 miles from the Menin Gate in Ypres to the Cenotaph in Whitehall, timed to arrive for the National Service of Remembrance on Sunday 11th November 2018. Planned as a mark of respect to those who died in the Great War, it will also raise funds for the charity. It is also an important milestone for Haig Housing which has been in existence since 1916 and obtained it subsequent name as a memorial to Earl Haig, soon after the Great War.

They are putting out a “Call to Arms” to Veterans and Serving Military personnel in order to recruit 100 Walkers to take part in this momentous event.

You will need to be sufficiently fit to undertake at least 25 miles walking per day, for 4 consecutive days. They want walkers from across the UK, of both sexes, all ages and from all 3 Services who are Veterans or currently serving Military Personnel, from the United Kingdom or those Commonwealth and other countries who fought alongside us in the trenches of the First World War and commit to both the entire Walk and an individual fundraising target. Current serving personnel will be walking as civilians on their own merit.

They are also looking for people to host 2 walkers for an evening in the Kent area during the walk. All relevant information for walkers, hosts and volunteers can be found at www.tlwh.org.uk
