Armed Forces Day 2018

Armed Forces Day 2018

Off By Ed Hanna

Since 2009 the last Saturday in June has seen the always colourful and exciting celebration of our Armed Forces. This year Armed Forces Day will focus on Llandudno in Wales, supported by hundreds of smaller events all across the UK.

This year’s Armed Forces Day falls on 30 June, when at precisely 11 o’clock a parade of around 1,000 Serving personnel, Veterans, Cadets and marching bands will march from the Llandudno War Memorial signalling the start of the day’s celebrations.

Armed Forces Day is a national show of support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, including currently Serving troops to Service families, Veterans and Cadets. People from all over the UK will be getting involved and showing their support by attending or organising an event or party in their local community.

Home

Although the British Armed Forces are happily, not currently deployed in war they continue to work hard to defend the UK through activities at home and abroad. The public have taken easily to Armed Forces Day as a way to thank and show their appreciation to the Forces and their families for all they do.

Armed Forces Day is the crystallisation of what the Government’s Armed Forces Covenant sets out to do. The Covenant is a pledge made on behalf of the people of the UK that together we acknowledge and understand that the Armed Forces community should be treated with fairness and respect in the wider communities, economy and the society they Serve. Indeed, few people would argue that the British Armed Forces deserve to be celebrated.

For Service-leavers Armed Forces Day is an important event. Towns and cities will see plenty of Personnel in uniform and indeed Military assets on show. This helps the public to understand just a little bit of what’s behind the headlines about peacekeeping, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and fighting terrorism. The Armed Forces community deserves its day and a whole lot more, and Armed Forces Day helps everyone to remember that.

Save the date

Armed Forces Day celebrations begin on Monday 25 June when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country.

Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 30 June 2018 with Reserves Day on 27 June
