British Military Fitness Marks Its Coming Of Age

Off By Ed Hanna

British Military Fitness, which was founded by three former Army colleagues who pooled their money to pay for equipment and an advert in the London Evening Standard, is celebrating its coming of age – and booming business!

Fewer than 10 participants turned up to the first BMF classes in London’s Hyde Park in April 1999. Now the outdoor fitness organisation, known for its blue, red and green-bibbed exercisers, has nearly 15,000 members.

Those members, ranging from exercise rookies to fitness veterans benefit from fun and effective hour-long classes run by 500 full and part-time instructors, who are all ex-military, at more than 150 locations all over the UK from Perth to Plymouth.

Harry Sowerby, Co-founder and Managing Director of BMF, said: “We’ve gone from strength to strength over the past 18 years. As well as our classes, we now offer The Major mud runs, the BMF Academy for training fitness instructors, our Sun Fit activity holiday in Lanzarote, Surfing weekends, relationships with business partners like Café Pod and our Nutrition expert Ben Coomber. I hope both newcomers and familiar faces will join us in their local park to celebrate this milestone. Here’s to another 18 years!”

ABOUT BMF: Founded in 1999, British Military Fitness (BMF) inspires positive change in people’s lives by bringing them together in the great outdoors to get active. Aimed at anyone who wants to get fitter but struggles to find the motivation, the outdoor classes are led by military-trained professionals with fitness qualifications who tailor sessions to match the abilities of the members in their group – marked out by their distinctive blue, red and green bibs. Memberships can be used at any park, at any time, on any day classes are taking place and there are 400 classes held each week, accommodating all fitness levels.
