The D-Day Darlings Remember With The Royal British Legion

In the build-up to Remembrance Sunday on 13th November, wartime trio The D-Day Darlings have been busy helping The Royal British Legion as they urge the nation to ‘rethink Remembrance’.

Having supported the RBL’s fundraising efforts since forming 10 years ago, The D-Day Darlings were invited to perform at the launch of this year’s poppy campaign in Birmingham on 2nd November. The first of eight poppy day events to run across the country found flash mobs, military bands and musical performers filling the city centre with music and nostalgia, whilst reminding onlookers of the story of the poppy.

Speaking of the importance of Remembrance, producer of The D-Day Darlings, Katie Ashby said, “There has been a lot of hype recently over the wearing of poppies and poppies being banned and it’s saddening as I think people are losing sight of its real meaning. I believe the poppy is a symbol of hope and remembrance; surely those that have given their lives to offer a better life to others deserve to be remembered, instead of being scrubbed from history altogether?

“This is perhaps why I feel so strongly about The Royal British Legion and the work they do for our veterans and their families. It is an honour to be able to perform for them at these, and other events they run throughout each year at their local clubs. The songs we sing come from an era which resonates with their supporters and we hope to translate their message to those that know little about this worthy cause.

“To date we have raised over £30,000 and I have every intention of continuing our efforts through the Darlings, supporting the Legion at other events in the future. In fact, we’ll be performing at RBL Worcester Park on Remembrance Day so for anyone who would like to join us down south for a singalong, chat or to donate, come along. The event will start with a 2-minute silence at 11am at the War Memorial.”

Giles Coleman, community fund-raiser for the Royal British Legion comments, “The D-Day Darlings have been a valued partner of the Poppy Appeal, their ongoing support and fundraising activity enables the RBL to engage and assist ex-service men and women now and for future generations.”

Poppy Day events will be continuing through the week around the region and across the country. To find out more visit the Royal British Legion website.
