Armed Forces Day 2015 Is Coming!

Guildford will play host to this year’s Armed Forces Day (27 June 2015) when the wider public celebrates the incredible contribution that the Armed Forces make to life in Great Britain.

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community and that includes anyone from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. This year, organisers are encouraging people to mark this morale boosting day buy getting involved online, attending an event or perhaps even organising a party.

This year’s Armed Forces Day will be the tenth since what was then called ‘Veteran’s Day’ was established in 2006. The name change means that the events are now more inclusive to all Service-personnel and although it isn’t a public holiday it is hoped that some of that celebratory spirit will be in force.

The day will be marked with local ceremonies and the presentation of medals – in fact the date (27 June) was specifically chosen as it’s the day after the date in 1857 when the first investiture of the Victoria Cross took place in 1857.

Guildford will play host to ceremonies and parades and it is hoped that people will be drawn to cheer them on. You can find out what is happening to mark the day in your area by visiting the websites of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

Look out for the start of Armed Forces Day celebrations Monday 22 June when the Armed Forces Day flag is raised on public buildings and famous landmarks around the country – just in time for Reserves Day on Wednesday 24 June which provides an opportunity for the country to recognise our Reserve Forces and a provides a timely warm-up for the main celebrations.
